As a touring special effects tech and military vet, I have been lucky

enough to travel pretty extensively, and because of that, it’s been

embarrassing to watch how many many Americans felt “insulted”

or “annoyed” by a Latino artist speaking Spanish at the

Super Bowl.

When you travel, you quickly realize that English is spoken all over

the world, and that a lot of people speak more than one language.

It’s the norm.

In the United States, many people have never had the chance or

the desire to travel, so their exposure to other cultures is limited.

But perspective really matters.

Here in the States, our “freedom” has made us free to be lazy

and undisciplined. There is little accountability and very few

people pushing us to become better versions of ourselves into

adulthood. Most Americans are extremely lazy and indisciplined

when it comes to learning other languages (myself included),

not because we are all bad people, but because we have never

had to.

Now imagine how that performance might have felt

if you actually understood Spanish.

Maybe you would have felt empowered.

Maybe you would have felt proud.

Or maybe you would have realized that the discomfort had

less to do with the language itself and more to do with

deep seated insecurity and an unwillingness to step

outside what feels familiar.

Anyone who thinks they’ve learned all they need to is truly a fool.

Humility is the starting point of true understanding.

And perhaps that WAS the message.

As Americans, it is time to get over ourselves and build a

cultural desire to learn to communicate with the rest of

the world, because that is the only way we will become a

better society overall.

See the bigger picture.
